NIHB Therapy Sudbury: Mental Health Counselling May Be More Accessible Than You Realize

NIHB Therapy Sudbury: Mental Health Counselling May Be More Accessible Than You Realize

Cost can stop a therapy search before it really begins.

You find a therapist who sounds promising.

Then you wonder what appointments cost, whether insurance covers them and whether ongoing counselling is realistic.

For eligible First Nations and Inuit people looking for NIHB therapy in Sudbury, the Non-Insured Health Benefits program may help remove that particular barrier.

And if you didn't know mental-health counselling was included, you're certainly not alone.

NIHB Includes Professional Mental Health Counselling

Indigenous Services Canada administers NIHB for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients residing in Canada.

The program includes professional mental-health counselling among its benefits. NIHB will cover counselling when the services aren’t covered through another public or private plan.

Currently, people who are eligible can receive up to 22 hours of counselling per calendar year through an eligible therapist, with additional hours potentially considered case-by-case.

If you are registered in Ontario, you must work with an Ontario therapist.

What Can Counselling Be For?

There doesn't have to be one particular kind of problem.

Maybe you're experiencing anxiety or depression.

Perhaps grief is taking up more space than you expected.

You may be navigating trauma, relationships, family conflict, identity or a major change.

Or maybe you're simply exhausted.

Mental-health counselling can give you somewhere to understand what you're carrying.

Do I Have to Pay Up Front?

Not necessarily.

NIHB-enrolled providers are encouraged to bill the program directly, which can mean you do not have to pay fees at the point of service. However, Indigenous Services Canada recommends asking a prospective therapist about their billing practices and whether any payment is expected from you.

That makes it important to confirm your individual eligibility and coverage before counselling begins.

You Still Get to Think About Fit

Coverage is important.

So is the relationship with your therapist.

Do you feel listened to?
Can you ask questions?
Do they understand your experience in this world as an indigenous person?
Can they sit with you in silence?
Does the therapist understand the concern you're bringing?
Do you feel respected?
Are they willing to adapt?

Therapy can be deeply personal, and using NIHB doesn't change your right to look for a therapist who feels appropriate for you.
